How it works
How it works, from your numbers to funding
Six steps, no credit check to begin, and one team on the other end rather than a list of lenders.
Most people arrive at The Business of Money with a GST question, a pricing worry or a hiring decision, not a loan in mind. Some find along the way that a well-timed facility would make the plan work. If that's you, here's what happens next. A good place to begin is the free GST & provisional tax set-aside planner; if you already know the figure, go straight to the 60-second enquiry.
- 1
1. Size the need first (optional but useful)
Run the GST & provisional tax set-aside planner or the price-rise calculator. Walking in with a figure, a date and a reason shortens everything that follows.
- 2
2. Send a 60-second enquiry
How much, what for, roughly what the business turns over, which region you're in and whether you own property. No credit check happens at this point.
- 3
3. A person reads it and rings you
Someone on our New Zealand lending team goes through what you wrote, then calls to fill in the gaps: how long you've traded, timing, security and what you're trying to achieve.
- 4
4. You hear what's realistic
Unsecured or secured on property, roughly how much and what paperwork it would take. If it isn't a fit, you'll be told so, plainly.
- 5
5. Paperwork and assessment, only if you proceed
Usually recent business bank statements, ID, your NZBN or company details and, for secured lending, information about the property. A credit check is discussed here and not before.
- 6
6. Settlement
Funds are paid to your business account, or straight to Inland Revenue, a vendor or a supplier when that suits the purpose better.
Useful to have nearby
- Your NZBN or company number, and how long the business has been trading.
- Recent business bank statements, which matter most for unsecured and cash-flow options.
- The address and rough value of any property you could offer as security.
- What the money is for and when it's needed: a quote, a contract, an IRD statement or a forecast all help.
- Anything that's better said early, such as IRD arrears, past credit trouble or a recent bad patch. Each is looked at case by case, and saying so up front saves everyone time.
Common questions
Will enquiring show up on my credit file?
No. Getting in touch involves no credit check. One is only raised once you've decided to apply.
Does my enquiry go out to several lenders?
No. We don't sell enquiries or broadcast them. A single team looks after yours and a real person makes the call.
Why does the form ask for so much accuracy?
Because the amount, purpose, turnover and any property you own decide which option suits. Close-to-real answers mean the first conversation is useful instead of a round of corrections.
How much could my business borrow?
Trading businesses can be considered for unsecured and cash-flow options typically between $5,000 and $500,000, sized on turnover and bank statements. Lending secured on residential or commercial property runs from $20,000 to $5,000,000.
What will it cost?
We don't publish interest rates. Each facility is priced on the business's own facts, so the full cost is explained once we understand your situation.
Can the money be used for personal spending?
No. Every facility we help with is for business purposes only.
Numbers done? Let's talk about funding them
About a minute to tell us the amount and the reason. No credit check to ask, no passing your details around, and a person on our NZ team who rings you with options that suit.
